peru dreaming

I recently got a new computer and imported all my photos from my iPhone. A large majority of them were from my amazing trip to Peru we took in April/May. I thought I would post some of my favourites today. I was able to experience one of the coolest trips anyone could take, one week on the Amazon River in a little cruise boat and then one week Cusco/Macchu Pichu.

Our boat was an old barge transformed into a 20 cabin river boat. No spa or pool here! This was the very rustic portion of our adventure.

We went pirahana fishing, yes that’s what I said. If you know me you know I don’t fish… ever. This was definitely the hands on portion of our trip. Here’s my awesome moms catching the “big ones”!!! I couldn’t have asked for better travel partners.

It truly was a trip of a lifetime, as the water was very high and we were able to travel within tributaries and canals not commonly accessiable at  this time of year.  Many families that live e in homes that are floating and awaiting for the water to go down, so they can rebuild their homes on land. Or some families have a had to move to higher ground. They will return to rebuild when water goes down.

This was a no frills lifestyle, while on the Amazon. I literally barely wore makeup! Shocking I know. Every day we jumped on our skiffs and destined off the mighty Amazon to discover wildlife, villages and beautiful sunsets.

After 1 week on the Amazon River, we flew to Cusco and from there made our way to Machu Picchu. We stopped for a picture opportunity just outside of Huayllabamba. It was spectacular view filled with vibrant sky and farm lands. Let’s not forget the donkeys!!!

As we toured one of the Inca villages, we came accross this lady and her son. She described her life in her village, with a song.

I love this picture because it’s right before we got onto to the train to Machu Picchu Sanctuary. I got to experience this wonderful adventure with an amazing group of people. Here’s my mom and dad!

Here it is. The most amazing place I have ever been.  The guide said get ready for it as we walked through the rock entrance and boom, it hits you! Picture truly cannot describe the way this place makes you feel. Totally awesome!

Well that’s just a few of my pictures from my great Peruvian adventure. I enjoyed looking through these pictures just as much as I love sharing them with you!

Well seasoned

Well planting season is upon us. Herb gardens are extremely popular on Pinterest. I have tried in the past for indoor herbs but haven’t had huge success. I found many examples I liked on Pinterest, but took my own approach. I loved the idea of herbs off the side of the deck.saw this
I used a 19 X 76 cm planting vessel that should fit 6 herb plants comfortably. I also used half a large bag of potting soil. If I were to guesstimate it was aprox. 1.5L of soil to fill my planter prior to adding the plants.

I got my plants from the Terwillegar Farmers Market today from a vendor, August Farms, based out of Devon. The gentleman there was incredibly helpful for an amateur gardener such as me.  He actually forgot cilantro, which would be my first pick. But he mentioned it’s a fast growing plant and overwhelms other herbs. Its best planted stby itself. Good advice!
I went with Italian parsley, oregano, basil, rosemary, sage and summer savory. Savory? Summer Savory?!? What do I do with savory? I’ll let you know!!

I filled my planter 3/4 full and spaced out 6 plants on top to make sure they would all fit nicely without crowding each other. I gently placed each herb in their new designated spots and lightly covered with fresh soil to secure them.

I watered them gently and mounted on to my back porch. Voila! Fresh herbs for the season. I’m so happy with the results. Doesn’t it look great?

Who knew I would become such a gardener?

Til next time!

photo challenge

So I’m running out of time to catch up on my photo challenge.

I really loved coming up with this series of photos. Lots of great options and ideas running through my head.

Day 21. Pretty Pattern

When I was in Seattle last year, I found myself in a friends and family sale at Kate Spade. I purchased this scarf  because of the pattern! (as well the discount I was offered!).

Day 22 Trees

Sometimes I wish I worked downtown, the hustle and bustle of the big city. But then I wouldn’t have this to look at break and lunchtime.

Day 23 Sunset

The days have been longer and the sun has been setting around 7-730ish. What a nice change. This is taken from my second story window  over looking the street, park and little pond in front of my home.

Day 24 Smile

My favorite smile is from my favorite person, my husband Matt. Here he is with milkshake. (Those usually make him smile)

Day 25 Sunflare

I wasn’t sure how to take a pic of sunflare. I tried a few times, few different windows etc. Finally was sitting in my living room paying with the camera and out this one came! Its really pretty pic of my front entrance.

I’m slightly behind on my challenge. I was hoping to catch up before I went away.  Hopefully I can pull it off!  42 hours until take off!

the perfect soft chocolate chip cookie

I have always struggled with baking. Not my forte. Exact measurements and following instructions is not my favorite thing to work with and that’s what baking basically is.  I finally found a recipe that worked for me! (on Pinterest)

The perfect soft chocolate chip cookie.

This is a keeper!!!!

Super easy I whipped up in 20mins or so. This recipe made about 24 cookies.

I learned a few things in regards to successful baking with this recipe.

No need to over mix!!!

It’s OK for the batter to be ooey-gooey sticky

Do NOT over bake!!!!

Great success!!!

My husband and my brother-in-law mentioned they tasted like their grandma’s cookies! Now that’s compliment! Keep this recipe and try it!

Special Olympics 2012

I had a wonderful opportunity to take four days away from the office to volunteer with the Special Olympics Canada Winter Games. I work for Intuit Canada that promotes and compensates employees to volunteer, up to 32 hours, for an organization of their choice. I chose to work with the Special Olympics as the nationals were being held over 5 days in St Albert, just north of Edmonton.

The games involved athletes from all across Canada participating in 7 different events. Snowshoeing and cross country skiing were held at the Strathcona Wilderness Center. Speed skating, figure skating, floor hockey were held at Servus Place in St. Albert. This is where I worked a majority of the time. All Alpine skiing events were help in Jasper at Marmot Basin. Last but not least was the curling events held at the new curling club in St Albert which was all renovated and did not look like curling rinks I’m used to! Like in St. Francois Xavier!

I met so many wonderful volunteers, athletes, friends, and families and coaches. Putting together an event of this caliber is quite amazing. I have never been involved with such an opportunity and it has definitely given me a new perspective on non-profit and volunteering. I was overwhelmed with the gratitude and spirit throughout this volunteer experience. No matter what task was given, myself and over 800 other volunteers jumped in and were happy to help in any which way needed.

All in all, the entire event was deemed to be a great success and everyone enjoyed themselves greatly. I would highly recommend taking advantage of programs with employers that allows you to jump in to a new situation with amazing organizations such as the Special Olympics. I really am so blessed to have had this opportunity!

We had over 3500 knit or crocheted scarves in the Games colors of blue and off white (with a splash of red) from all over the world. My grandma and Cousin Brittany sent a few!

I had such a good time!! So happy I took advantage of this program. I met some amazing people and athletes! Can’t wait til next year!

Photo challenge catch up!

I’m catching up after a busy week. I have been taking pictures but haven’t been around to make a post about it. So here we go!

Photo challenge #16 what I ate

Our family has a wonderful Sunday family meal @Vivo Restaurant one Sunday evening. This is a family style Italian dining, where everything is served to share. We ended it off with some fantastic gelato, family portion with various scoops of fruit gelato. Peach, grapefruit, and some other fruit ones I cannot remember.

Photo challenge #17 on a shelf

So I looked around on my shelves and I noticed not much I got going on at work. I do have a cool skull candle giving to me by a colleague. I always get comments on how random that is to have at my desk.

Photo challenge #18 in my bag

What’s in my bag: lipgloss, lip moisturizer, wallet, keys, headphones for iPhone, green tea and a valentine from my husband

Photo challenge #19 where I slept

Here is my bed and me playing with new photo app Snapseed. I actually got it free from a Starbucks free download card.  Its super fun, I’m sure if I was a more experienced photographer I would make better use of it!

Photo challenge #20 what I read

I’m currently enrolled in U of T taking online marketing courses. So this is the only thing I’m reading is my textbook. Using another cool (free) app CamWOW

catch up

Day 13 Photo Challenge From a distance.

I spent a wonderful weekend in Kelowna with my family. We spent Saturday @ Big white resort and had a great day. My from a distance photo is taken at the hill right beside the skating rink. With my new Iphone I’ve been looking for all the new cool apps, especially when it comes to taking pictures. Tiny Planets is a photo effect app that makes any picture look like a tiny planet by wrapping picture around. Check out this video!

Day 14 Photo Challenge Flowers

First sign of spring? I found beautiful crocus at the grocery store for myself!  I would never buy purple flower but this guy was looking my way!

Day 15 Photo Challenge  mes souliers

Well it’s snowing in Edmonton…finally. I just about forgot where I live. So I am wearing boots and socks. I don’t wear socks very often, must be a lot of snow.

i got some serious pinning happening tonight! Cannot wait!

photo challenge backlog

I’ve been out & about in Kelowna, so I’m slightly behind on my Photo Challenge. I’ve been trying to keep up with pictures at least. So here’s a few at once.

Something new. I always have something new, fortunately because I’m always shopping. Of all my recent puchases these are my favorites. tory burch flats. I love the color, the fit, the tassels!

I would take a picture of my iPhone because this is the latest technology to change my world. I dug a little deeper then that, I’m also using my phone for this challenge. I tend to frequenting a little known place called Starbucks. I recently downloaded the ap and discovered I can pay for my tasty beverages using my phone only. I dont even have carry around my card! Now this is technology that I could get behind!

A faceless self potrait.

I was playing aorund on my phone at 6am, waiting for our flight. Trying to figure out how a faceless potrait would work. I think I can work on this one and will attempt again.

Something I made.

Well I’m taking different angle on this. I made it to Kelowna. With the Desilets clan from Manitoba joining us we made it a celebration for my mom’s bday! I got a beautiful cake from Wild Earth Bakery and we made a party! YUMMERS.

Finally for today PC#11

Something FUN.

Now i always have fun in Kelowna. My parents are here, I got married here and it’s so beautiful. Another thing fun thing about Kelowna is that my bud for life Linnea lives right near by. Linnea and I have a passion for spicy food. So this picture was taken at a little mexi joint in downtown Kelowna, Fernando’s Taquiera. So much fun!
